GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

The Great Smoky Mountains, named for the misty clouds that tend to cling to the hills and mountains, features a wild landscape rich with traces of its human past. The forests are unspoiled and similar to those the early settlers found. The majestic climax of the Appalachian Highlands is a wilderness sanctuary preserving the world's finest examples of temperate deciduous forest. The park protects one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, a place that supports more than 4,000 species of plants, 130 trees, 65 mammals, 230 birds, and more species of salamanders than are found anywhere else on earth. Wildflowers and migrating birds abound in late Spring while Autumn's pageantry of colors usually peaks in mid-October. Over 800 miles of trails thread the whole of the Smokies' natural fabric - its waterfalls, coves and rushing streams.

This year-round park is located on the North Carolina/Tennessee border and traversed by U.S. Hwy 321/441, the park borders the tourist town of Gatlinburg, TN and is just an hour from Knoxville.

Activities: Hiking, Horse Trails, Bicycle Trails, Fishing, and living history museum at Cade's Cove.
