KEY LARGO
About 60 miles South of Miami via US Highway 1 on the Florida Keys Overseas Highway is Key Largo, known as the "Dive Capital of the World". Key Largo marks the beginning of the Overseas Highway -- 100 more miles is Key West, at the end of the highway.
By Key Largo there are reefs, ship wrecks, and even the Statue of "Christ of the Abyss" - a bronze statue of Christ found amid a coral reef 25 feet under water, its outstretched arms beckoning to divers and snorkelers to experience a rare and wonderful world of beauty. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a diving paradise. As an integral portion of the 2,800-square-nautical-mile Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Key Largo features six unique Sanctuary Preservation Areas where fishing of any kind is prohibited. The fish are more friendly at Key Largo, creating a treasure for underwater photographers.
