SANIBEL ISLAND, FLORIDA

Sally probably started selling seashells on the shore of Sanibel. Well… maybe not, but the ‘ol tongue twister seems fitting considering there’s more than 400 varieties of shells decorating the sand of Sanibel Island, Florida. This island, along with its neighbor Captiva Island, are probably the most widely known of all the Florida Islands. While Sanibel boasts shelling as a main attraction, Captiva’s main feature is the fact there are no attractions. Reminiscent of a deserted island, Captiva offers quiet, timeless beaches and sunshine. Sanibel has a wide selection of unique shops, galleries and restaurants. The J.N “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is the home to exotic species of plants and birds. Drive, bike or hike through the refugee, which takes up 5,000 acres (almost one-third of the island). Otherwise a narrated tour is available by tram or canoe. Natives of the Island celebrate the cleanliness of the shorelines while tourists traditionally flock to see the annual Sanibel shell fair.

Sanibel Island, on the south Florida Gulf Coast, is reached from the Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach, area via Highway 867.
