TWIN FALLS
The city of Twin Falls, ID was named after a set of waterfalls near the city site. Actually there are numerous waterfalls and springs along the Snake River Canyon around the city. A series of streams originating in the Snake River aquifer gush from beneath the rimrock on the north bank of the Snake River and cascade into the river. They were once numerous enough to merit the name Thousand Springs and were a landmark noted by the emigrants. Today, nearly 100 springs are still visible. About 50 miles west of Twin Falls is Three Island Crossing (a state park) near the little town of Glenn Falls. Here the emigrants utilized 3 little islands in the Snake River to aid in its crossing.
The nearby spectacular Shoshone Falls are best viewed in the spring (the water flow slows in the winter and dries up in the growing season due to irrigation needs).
